September 18, 2024 – Good Neighbors is responding to the devastating impact of Typhoon Yagi, which has caused destruction and loss of life across Southeast Asia.
The situation remains critical, with the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) reporting significant casualties: nearly 300 deaths and 38 missing people in Vietnam, 631,000 affected and 116 deaths in Myanmar, and ongoing disruptions in the Philippines and Laos.
As part of our emergency response efforts, we are distributing food, essential supplies, and medical assistance to those most affected by the typhoon in these regions. Our mission is to ensure that the most vulnerable communities receive the support they need to recover and rebuild their lives.
Vietnam
On September 7, the typhoon caused severe damage in Hanoi and surrounding regions, resulting in at least 170 deaths and 150 missing persons. Vietnamese communities have been heavily affected, with residents forced to evacuate. In response, Good Neighbors Vietnam is actively engaging in relief efforts, including food distribution, medical support, and the provision of essential items such as mosquito nets and blankets. Furthermore, we are assisting in the reconstruction of homes for families.
Thailand
Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand experienced its worst flooding in 40 years due to the typhoon, impacting over 53,000 lives. In response, Good Neighbors Thailand swiftly mobilized relief efforts. Last week, we distributed survival kits, rice, and drinking water to 1,300 households in remote highland communities cut off by floods and landslides. These efforts were made possible through the support of bilingual teachers and community leaders, ensuring that relief reached every family in need.
Laos
Typhoon Yagi led to extensive flooding in Luang Namtha Province, causing widespread disruption. The flooding forced the temporary closure of Luang Namtha Airport and inundated the first floor of the local hospital, leaving many residents stranded and in need of support. Good Neighbors Laos has stepped in to provide immediate food distribution and recovery assistance to those affected. These relief activities will also extend through September and October 2024.
