Typhoon strikes Philippines

1. Status of sponsored children’s families

The entire Gimoto area was affected by the typhoon Man-Yi, and it is estimated that all sponsored families were impacted.

Out of 2,517 households:

  • 1,203 households reported partial damage to their homes.
  • 512 households experienced total destruction of their homes.

Communication and electricity remain disrupted, delaying detailed assessments. Most residents are staying in their damaged homes. Some have managed temporary repairs using available materials like scrap wood, sandbags, and tarpaulin.

Urgent support for basic necessities, such as food and drinking water, is critically needed.

2. Progress of Emergency Response (Food and water support)

  • Food distribution: Emergency food assistance is provided through the food pantry model (This model involves setting up food-sharing stands at the community level, where families can take what they need. It also encourages communities to share surplus crops with those in need during recovery periods.

3. Emergency Needs

  • Short-term Needs: Food, water, and housing materials are urgently required, especially due to delays in agricultural recovery on the island.
  • Mid-to Long-term Needs: Support for housing reconstruction and livelihood recovery. Most residents are fishers and are resuming fishing activities. However, significant damage to abaca farming (a key natural textile crop) required urgent intervention.

Now, GN PHL is maximizing available budgets to provide essential supplies, seeking donations from local donors, and preparing for additional support.

In light of the urgent situation in the Philippines, GN GPC has made a decision to support our sponsored children and their families.

  • Main Activities: Food distribution, Medical Check-up, Provision of shelter kits, and Cash for Work
  • Estimated no. of beneficiaries: 2,058
  • Project Period: November, 2024 ~ December, 2024
  • Total budget: 160,000 USD (GN GPC 120,000 USD + GN PHL 41,214 USD)
