In Cebu City, Philippines — famous as a tourist destination — lies a slum hidden behind the glamour.
As always, 10-year-old Andrea heads to the streets with her disabled mother to earn a living.
“Pancakes for sale”
In a slum on the outskirts of the city, a new day begins for 10-year-old Andrea and her mother at their small pancake stand in a narrow alley.
Andrea diligently makes deliveries in place of her mother, who has difficulty moving due to a congenital disability.
When the pancake business does not bring any sales, they have no choice but to head out to the streets to sell bottled water.
Even after selling pancakes all day, there’s barely any money left once rent and ingredient costs are paid.
“There are days Andrea works
on an empty stomach.
I have to skip meals myself and save,
just so I can feed her dinner.”
To make sure her daughter gets one more meal, the mother goes without her own.
“I have to hold in my pee and poop
as long as I can. We don’t have a bathroom at home.”
A broken ceiling, damp conditions, and mold—Andrea is constantly exposed to insects due to the unsanitary environment.
But the worst part is the lack of a proper bathroom. Renting a neighbor’s toilet costs 10 pesos ($0.18) each time, so to save money, Andrea endures and holds it in.
“My mother’s leg is getting worse. She’s in constant pain
and often falls while walking.”
Due to a lack of proper treatment, Andrea’s mom now suffers from unexplained pain in her leg.
