Rough Life
With every chop a thousand splinters pierce his delicate skin.
A job far too dangerous for 12-year-old Edrine.
Yet again, he picks up his sharp ax to survive another day.
“The only thing I can do with my bare hands is chopping down trees.”
12-year-old Edrine became the sole guardian of his younger sister after both of their parents passed away 3 years ago. As food became scarce, Edrine stopped attending school to labor for what small income he could gather.
“If I don’t work, we have to survive another day with boiled grass water”
With his untrained skills, Edrine is repeatedly cut and stabbed by the ax he’s not used to… Edrine spends his whole day cutting down five trees, selling them to earn $1 USD (4,000 Ugandan Shilling).
“My dream was to become a mechanic. To think that I might have to spend my whole life cutting down trees is dreadful. My wish is to send my younger sister Sarah to school. That means I must work harder.”

9-year-old Salua panning for gold among men – Salua pays 3,000 shillings (about 70 cents), which is more than her daily income, as work expenses to take care of her mother that has malaria and her 2-year-old disabled brother.

5 brothers live off 5,000 shillings ( about $1.10) earned by climbing high trees, cutting trees, and burning charcoal with them without any sleep for a week.
12-year-old Ouma wanders an empty house, looking for a place to sleep.
Abandoned by his parents, he and his 9-year-old brother sold leftover charcoal that other people left. He is barely surviving with the food that he is getting.
